"Mercy" is the second single from the album Rockferry by Duffy. Co-written and produced by Steve Booker. It was made available for download from February 11, 2008 and was released physically on February 25, 2008. On February 17, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number one solely on download sales. The retro-soul style is given further significance by the appearance of several Northern Soul dancers in the song's video. As of 25th July 2008, Mercy has been viewed on YouTube over 17 million times. According to Duffy, the song is autobiographical and is about "sexual liberty" and "not doing something somebody else wants you to do"."Mercy" won the 2008 MOJO magazine award in the category of Song of the Year. The award is voted by readers of the magazine. The magazines editor Phil Alexander called the song a "timeless" classic that " could really have come from any period in time over the last 50 years". The song was used as Duffy's debut single internationally. The music video for "Mercy" features Duffy standing on top of a platform performing. There are Northern Soul Dancers in the music video dancing. Duffy is wearing a black sleeveless dress with red high heels. A second version was shot for U.S. This version features Duffy performing while many people dance along.
