It must be his best song. It's my favourite. He sang this at the Berlin concert. I cried. I have been listening to this song for over 30 years and now I hear the great man sing it live. Heaven.

Female choir line helps...
he did not ... ( 3 weeks ago by lamusevenale)
he did not literally mean his brother. u can tell he did not really know the guy. he said brother cuz it's another human, another man, who loved Jane, his wife. and to opposite to ''killer'' meaning he hurt him a lot. and he's kind to him.. cuz he understands him, somehow. and cuz the other took care of Jane, for a while. gotta read btw the lines sometimes...
yes but anyway.. ... ( 3 weeks ago by lamusevenale)
yes but anyway.. cohen himself said this was about a love triangle.. between him, a woman and another man. he did said, though, that he was not sure if that man was himself. but he did have a blue raincoat. like the raincoat of the guy who steals Jane.. funny?
yes, and his friend ... ( 3 weeks ago by MOUCHADOR)
yes, and his friend F. who was a big revolutionnary and learned him everything about the deep sense of the revolution and about the life of Catherine Tegakwitha, loved his wife Edith. They're both dead and this song allways remember me this story.

The place of the ... ( 3 weeks ago by liliamaramello)
The place of the guy I was falling in love with,I mean, who waskind of a a loner, and seemed to live "in a house in the desert", apart from the world, no tv , no computer...The song would touch me and hut me so at the same time - I couldn't tell why.
I guess I kind of ... ( 3 weeks ago by liliamaramello)
I guess I kind of felt it was foretelling what was about to happen. Don't know. I always felt as it was telling me things before they actually happened.. The thing was over, there was this kind of triangle thing...
There were parts of ... ( 3 weeks ago by liliamaramello)
There were parts of the song I couldn't quite understand then - but now I can. Anyway,it feels to me now as if the song tells him what I could never say: " I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you...I am glad you stood in my way... If you ever come by...well, your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free..." Love never dies;forgivenes and "saudade"-are part of it.

Im not sure what ... ( 1 week ago by jclwhite)
Im not sure what the lyrics really mean, and I don't think, like so many songs, there is an answer to what they mean, it is just about how they make you feel.
"And what can I tell you my brother, my killer What can I possibly say? I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you Im glad you stood in my way."

cannot be done better than this. no cover version will do justice. i sound like a twat, but i'm right.
jclwhite, it is ... ( 1 week ago by MrBunberry)
jclwhite, it is generally considered to be Leonard singing about himself at two different ages, as if the young and the middle-aged man have somehow met. Leonard had a blue raincoat in London in the early sixties, and did toy briefly with scientology ('going clear')

you can guess as to whether I'm either ticking the "sounds like a twat", or the "because I'm right" part of your comment. You know the answer...
