When you turn off the soldering tool do you tin the tip before turning it off or do you completely clean it?

definitely smother the tip in solder. i try to keep the tip covered as much as possible during use, too. Tip manufacturers actually recommend that you hold solder against a new tip when first heating it up so that it gets covered as soon as possible.
