Les is great, and certainly very original - but, even Les himself would be the first to tell you that these other guys are huge influences, Im sure! I see a LOT of Marcus Miller in Les's playing, for starters, but Les has made his own style/sound with it - which makes it unique. Check out virtually ANY Victor Wooten tune - you'll see he has it all...

i cant speak for others but, i like les not just for his amazing bass skills but his mind and every thing he creates, hes so bizarre and strange
He actually tried ... ( 1 week ago by rofyle)
He actually tried out for Metallica after Cliff Burton died. Stupid, talentless Metallica (Burton was their only talent), they rejected him on the basis he was "too good." Huh? Wanna say that again?

Geddy is one of les' Major idols..In fact, the bass he is playing in this video is signed by geddy lee himself
what do you mean ... ( 1 week ago by 99mik123)
what do you mean burton was their only talent?! he was the most untalented bassist ever! Just a bunch of crap hid behind alot of distorsion!!!
Learn to spell ... ( 1 week ago by rofyle)
Learn to spell before you try for a comeback. You not only give away your ignorance, but your level of intelligence as well. As far as talent goes, why don't you try to write something as memorable as Orion, the intro to For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Call of Ktulu, The Thing That Should Not Be, or To Live Is To Die. Burton forced Metallica to change their sound, hence the drastic difference between KEA and RTL. He was only in the studio for Pulling Teeth during KEA. Now, suck on that.
Array ( 1 week ago by ForeignObjectVideos)
Uhh.
Mate Pulling Teeth isn't that hard or well written. Milk's right. Pulling Teeth sounds good, let me think because he uses a disortion pedal and a wah pedal! Don't get wrong i love metallica, but I don't think Cliff BUrton's all that great.
Wow, so you pulled ... ( 1 week ago by rofyle)
Wow, so you pulled out one song and ignored the rest. Allow me to say this again. Orion. The Call of Ktulu. The Thing That Should Not Be. To Live Is To Die. AND Pulling Teeth. All songs he not only played bass on, BUT WROTE AS WELL. Now since you agree with Milk, let's see you write any of these. Let's see you also take a KEA Metallica, and turn them into a RTL and MOP Metallica. Hetfield and Ulrich both agree Burton was responsible for their symphonic sound. Les is best, but Cliff didn't suck.

I'm not saying he wasn't good.
But it's true he does fide behind distortion. I rekon i could write a better solo.
Yes he does hide ... ( 1 week ago by rofyle)
Yes he does hide behind distortion, but that's because his influences were classical. Some people concentrate on his Pulling Teeth solo, failing to recognize that was just something he'd been diddling around with for years. Metallica needed him to put something down on KEA in a hurry, so he chose that old solo. Flash forward two years to RTL, and you see a taste of what he could really do. He not only wrote the bass part, he wrote the entire song! Hetfield did lyrics, and Hammet his guitar solo.

Yeah, i love ... ( 6 days ago by Eingiru)
Yeah, i love metallica too and i think the same thing. He's not a bad player, but can't be compared to some other magnificent players, like Les for example. maybe is his playing style. Heavy Metal Shredding on bass doesn't give give you many opportunities on bass, especially with metallica's guitar playing. maybe on another environment his playing skills would had flourished more.Don't get me wrong, Metallica is awesome even with some... simple (?) bass lines.

Man, I don't get this whole competition element! Geddy Lee, Wooten, Miller, Les, etc. are incredibly different bass players with unique styles. I don't mean to sound like a hippy, but can't we just appreciate them for what they are, rather than denouncing one to praise the other? They're ALL good, and they ALL deserve respect.

I completely agree. ... ( 1 day ago by rofyle)
I completely agree. My original comment was simply that I couldn't believe Metallica turned Les down after Cliff died b/c they said he was too good. All of a sudden, I get comments saying Cliff sucked. What's that all about?
