No, they just preformed several performance tricks on the Mustang, to make it keep up with the Charger.

At least the ... ( 1 month ago by eemiri)
At least the charger had the decency to die young while the mustang got fatter and slower as the years went by and of course it couldn't outperform the rear drive sport coupes that came from Japan. It became an old man's car.

back in the late 60's it was all about what powered the cars ,if the charger had the 426 Hemi it was fast wich only 427 of them where made also was the 440 Six Pack if the Stang had the 428 it was an animal both cars had shitty suspensions the tires sucked in those days the Mustangs could not be beaten on the SCCA road courses and the Hemi was getting it done on the strip

That was a recent production. What I meant was the car he is driving was not a production car it was a "movie" car.

ok, this mustang is a production car. 1968 fastback 390cid with 4 speed manual trans. in highlander green. just has torque thrust wheels and the badging removed.its not modified to make it faster. not even possible they had to tell the charger to slow down! chargers are way heavy and even with a 440 they wouldnt be able to hang. straight line, road course, or on the street. this car has nothing to do with shelby and only since about 2000 has ford made a bullit edition.

I saw the film at late 68 in a theater of Mexico City and the car chase scene caused a great impact in the audience, especially when they were driving on the streets of the hilly City of San Francisco, indeed there were people who shouted due the sensation of going inside the car...!!!

2 were used in ... ( 3 weeks ago by GeneralCuster14)
2 were used in filming. the one used (the only one seen on camera. It took the damage :P) was sold to a junkyard and made into scrap metal. The other was sold to a person in the mid 70's, and was offered to be bought back by steve mcqueen, but the owner refused. After McQueen's death, the owner of the mustang sold it, and its whereabouts are unknown :(.

If you go back and read the history of the how the cars were behind the scenes, you will find they had to have a driver step in for steve. Also the charger was way faster then the stang and had to be slowed down to stay even. The stang suspension had to be moded.

a driver step in for mcqueen...???!!! are you mad?! where on this godforsaken rock did you get that information?
and no, both cars ... ( 2 weeks ago by AMCtilldeath)
and no, both cars were modified, rather heavily, especially when it came to suspension. the mustangs they didn't do enough too, and mcqueen took the hill way too fast, thus when the car landed, it hit so hard, that it tore the drain plug from the oil pan... (not exceedingly hard to do, been there, done that) ... and bent the flywheel... oops. i have a full article covering all this. but my god... mcqueen having a driver step in for him... the blasphemy!
Steve was capable ... ( 2 weeks ago by gmack2202)
Steve was capable of driving the Mustang, but too dangerous for a superstar, the stunt drivers were,I believe,Charger:Bill Hickman,Mustang:Bud Ekins,(who also did the motorcycle jump in The Great Escape.)

The car chase by which all others are judged. The interaction between the two badguys is so cool...they never say a word to each other and the driver only cracks a faint smile at the point he looks in his rearview mirror to see the mustang wiping out in the dirt!!!

I agree with the comment made by
guitardavid79. Bill Hickman the hitman driving the charger was a stuntman in real life. I read that he was good friends with James Dean and was with him when James Dean died in 1955. Bill Hickman died in 1986 from cancer.
I am trying to find out the name of the other hitman (older man) who played Bill's partner. I don't think his name is in the cast characters at the end of the movie. Anyone that can help me? I love the engine grown of the charger at 5:35.
