The movie is McCabe and Mrs. Miller. It was released in the 70s and is about a whorehouse in the Oregon frontere and the cardplayer who came to stay. Soundtrack by Cohan.

My mum had "Songs of Leonard Cohen" in the linen closet, in '78 or so. I found it and listened to it. Still have the LP...maybe the worse for wear, but still have it, lyric sheet too.
Of course it's morose and sad and self-absorbed. It was a different time. It's still true to itself and still worth hearing. And it was a time and place where Canada didn't have to demand acknowledgement of its voice, because Canada was heard through words and deeds. Just sayin'.
