The black guy you see in picture replaced Robbie MacIntosh who overdosed.He came in for their 3rd album.His name is Steve Ferrone(I think) who used to also play for the Soul Group Bloodstone! So originally they were all white,but like you say it does not matter! Great comment!

Bowie and Elton had some cross over hits on the R&B charts and were both were on Soul Train but AWB were always an R&B/Soul band with more charting R&B charting hits. AWB never crossed over to pop. I give Hall and Oats props for playing the Apollo with Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin of The Temptations. Sara Smile, She's Gone and I Can't Go For That were all R&B hits.
