A large standing army is a great thing to have when you are primarily concerned with continental threats. The Japanese, have been seen by the Chinese people as one of the greatest threats. However, a big army like this is terrible for actual intercontinental conquest. Its important to remember that an army moves on its stomach, and all these people must be supplied. Big armies are great for propaganda, but it becomes more difficult when you have to figure out how to logistically support one.
