Interesting that you would even bring-up the issue of sexual orientation. Gene Kelly was pretty progressive, he said that he knew dance attracted effeminate men and he never had a problem with that (unlike most in his generation). All he was concerned about was that men dance like men.
He felt that part of his job was to popularize dance as an athletic endeavour for men. Gay, straight...didn't matter. He just wanted to show how different men and women should be in their dance styles.

donald is very good, but i didnt know him until i saw this movie..i was born in '93, which to me is very sad bc i never got to meet gene and he died when i was 3 yrs old! but i grew up with his movies and they always brought me happiness in the hard times. i grew up with musicals and broadway shows and operas,ballet so now im a big drama club actress showtunes dork. kids at school make fun of me..oh well...anyway in this video i pay more attention to gene bc he is/always will be love of my life

One of the genius things of Gene Kelly's movies is that he insisted his dance sequences to be shot in very few takes. That's what is missing in movies today. If you notice, the takes are very long in this dance sequence, which requires a lot of skill..Gene and Donald had to danse for minutes at a time in sequence. Nowadays (not only in dance movies) the takes are so short that you wonder if the actors should get as much credit as they do...it's the editors that make wonders on the cutting floor!
