It's not "ride my tail." It's "be my wingman." My suspicion is that Taratino doesn't understand what true maniness is all about and wouldn't know an alpha male if one kicked him in the butt...because he'd be so busy running away to even look back. I don't know whether you saw the PBS marathon called Carrier. Too much of it was wallowing in particular sailors' miseries, but when it was good, it was very good. One of the great lines was one of the pilots saying to another, "If it wasn't for Top Gun you would never have been laid."
