They're not chords but rather samples which are taken from records or audio files. The mpc has some preloaded samples, which for the most part are very generic. Finding samples itself is an art which requires not only an ear for the music but time and effort spent looking through music.

I think maybe he means cords, not 'chords'. cords = cables.
So I assume you are talking about the SCSI cable plugged into the back, its because he is loadong the samples from a SCSI ZIP DRIVE which you can see on the table to the left (Pete's left) of the MPC. The other cords are plugged in to the amp (for us to hear what he is doing) and the deck (via the mixer to the right.
If he is actually talking about the samples then he has totally missed the point of sampling. Peace.

Legend. Pure and simple. Easily in my top five all-time producers, but he's the type of fellow that will sit at number one for a few weeks when I'm listening to "Mecca and The Soul Brother" know what I mean? ;)

Weak,simple, not a fan. if you want to see someone who cuts up other peoples music but then actually adds real creativity check out DJ shadow, rjd2, and Prefuse 73. I find stealing loops and adding vocals boring and uncreative.

In that simplicity lies its genius - I am a big fan of all three of the artists you've mentioned, especially DJ Shadow, and Prefuse's One Word Extinguisher - but this is all purely instrumental stuff. I love PR instrumentals but with an MC his stuff really shines - get Mecca and the Soul Brother THEN come back and say his stuff is uncreative.

I think the guys you name are pretty good, but they don't swing like Pete Rock, Prefuse 73 doesn't try to swing in that way, but rjd2 and shadow do. Thing is, they fail compared to Pete. Pete Rock is the man, it's not about making things complicated for the heck of it, it's about creating a vibe with the use of your ears, and Pete got some of the best ears in hip-hop, hard to front on.
