Amazing! people are still comparing Sonny to Bird 25 years after he died. Charlie Parker once told Stitt he would give him the Keys to the Kingdom. Not Keys to music Kingdom (bebop) as everyone assumes but the the Kingdom of heaven. Bird was trying to get money out of Sonny at the time.

Sommy told Bird he couldn't give him the keys even if he had them. Only God could do that. (BBC radio interview with sonny Stitt 1980). Anyway forget about comparisons they were both great.

Wrong. both are dead. Sonny had a much longer Career... and played a great tenor too. Sonny wins. haha. kidding ofcourse, im not comparing them

Yes, they are both dead in the phisical sense but their musical genius, energy, language, passion and way of thought still vibrates on this plane.
I love Sonny Stitt's playing, have most of his recording and have never compared him to 'Bird' as most people do. However, you cant escape the fact that every bebopper speaks the language of Charles Christopher Parker and that Parker is the true innovator whose popularity speaks for itself. "Bir

I hear ya...I'm thinking it's the placement of the keys in the audio mix not so much the player even though I could live without 90% of most what some of these guys tend to play...My colleagues from the past would be amazed if they caught me defending any pianist!

Now, this is a REALLY bad comment: Rene Urtreger is a real hero jazz musician, a great pianist, a contributor to some of the greatest records (Lift to the Scaffold: Miles Davis; Lester Young, Dizzy and more), and his own GREAT trio with Daniel Humair... His brief solo here, I think, is a model...I, for one, love it! Long live Rene Urtreger!!!

Once again, just a note to assert the actual greatness of this wonderful pianist, a hero in his own right too, Rene Urtreger!!!!!

Rene sounds great here! I write from a bandstand perspective. After working with and trying to understanding players like J.R.Montrose, Jaki Byard, etc I'm a minimalist when it comes to comping. Accompany Vs Comp I like comping. I prefer the comping behind a solo sparse/minimalistic letting the soloist tell the story instead of dictating harmonically where the soloist should go. I'm think that's why Miles would tell Herbie to lay out.
But hey, I'm still learning after 40 years...

Both Bird and Sonny Stitt were great players. I think that Sonny must have realized that he would invite comparison by playing an arrangement of Star Eyes that is so close to what Bird played. Nonetheless, I love Sonny Stitt's playing, especially on alto.

The only modern sax ... ( 2 months ago by jazmaan)
The only modern sax player that Bird himself paid much attention to was Wardell Gray. That's not to say that Bird didn't enjoy listening to some of his predecessors like Johnny Hodges or Willie Smith. But I think it was Hampton Hawes who said that when Wardell and Bird were on the same stand, when it was Dell's turn to solo, even Bird's ears would perk up. In Bird's later years you could even hear a few of Wardell's signature licks creep into Bird's own solos.

I read a Stitt interview in an old downbeat where he said that he switched to tenor because of the constant comparisons to Bird.

Yeah, Sonny was great. Saw him many times in the SF Bay Area with pianist Ed Kelly, Smiley Winters et al. It was always a contrivance comparing Sonny to Bird. I mean, you could also say Monk sounded like Ellington sometimes. Essentially people sound like themselves ... thankfully.
